Coinbase-Backed Report Warns of Looming Quantum Threat to Crypto Security
A new scientific report commissioned by Coinbase warns that quantum computing could eventually pose existential risks to blockchain cryptography. While current systems like Bitcoin and Ethereum remain secure, the study emphasizes the need for proactive measures as quantum capabilities advance.
The 50-page analysis features insights from Stanford's Dan Boneh, Ethereum Foundation's Justin Drake, and Eigen Labs' Sreeram Kannan. It projects that quantum computers may eventually grow powerful enough to break today's cryptographic protections—though significant engineering hurdles remain.
Google researchers have flagged Bitcoin's encryption as particularly vulnerable in a future quantum computing scenario. The Ethereum Foundation is already developing quantum-resistant signature schemes, recognizing this as a critical long-term challenge for the industry.
